Knights at Dawn
Slade Green, South London
February 2024
The 34Bus Collective for this project are Amy Dolan, Alistair Leys, Amaechi Anolue and Liv Wright

The design stage for the mural consisted of discussions with club members and residents. These were facilitated by 34Bus and Three Rivers. Through these discussions themes of local heritage were explored, alongside the everyday experiences of the area. Workshops were held at Haberdashers’ Slade Green Primary, giving young people the chance to voice and draw local elements they take pride in. Their words and drawings were incorporated into the final artwork.
The row of shields, in the mural, pays tribute to the vital defence lines in football and also embodies strength and protection. The symmetrical designs also nod to Slade Green's medieval heritage. Each shield is embellished with motifs inspired by the history of the area. The colour scheme evokes the sunrise. This was motivated by the thoughts of a young footballer from the club, who noted "getting up early as the sun comes up." in reflections on Saturday practice. A resident who helped in the mural painting, reinforced this visual, speaking of of the beautiful sunrises and sunsets she sees across the green.
